Welcome!
Welcome to St. John's
Lutheran Church. St. John's is a member of the
Evangelical
Lutheran Church in America. St. John’s
Lutheran Church is a community of people, called by God to proclaim Jesus Christ
as Lord, providing a center for spiritual growth through worship, instruction,
fellowship, service and love as we strengthen each other for daily life in
Christ.
Our History
St. John's Evangelical
Lutheran Church has existed on Christopher Street in Greenwich Village since
1855. Although Germans settled mainly in the area east of the Bowery, there
was a community in Greenwich Village which existed until the end of World
War I. The Federal-style building with a domed cupola, built in 1821-22 for
the Eighth Presbyterian Church, is one of the oldest religious buildings in
Greenwich Village. In 1842, the property was sold to St. Matthew's Episcopal
Church, who worshiped here until 1855 when it was turned over to the German
Lutherans. Victorian features were added in 1886 by Berg & Clark, and the
pediment was inscribed, "Deutsche Evangelish-Lutherische St. Johannes Kirche."
St. John's is within the Greenwich Village Historic District of the New York
City Landmarks Preservation Commission.
Meet Our Pastor
The
Reverend Lyndon F. Harris currently serves as Vacancy Pastor of St. John’s
Lutheran Church. An ordained Episcopal priest, Rev. Harris has served at a
variety of places in New York City, including Grace Church on Tenth St.
and Broadway, and Trinity Wall Street, with his primary responsibility being
priest-in-charge of St. Paul’s Chapel. In the aftermath of 9/11, Rev. Harris
developed and oversaw the relief operation at St. Paul’s Chapel that ultimately
served over half a million meals to the rescue workers in the course of
eight-and-a-half months. For more information about this ministry, and a
virtual tour of St. Paul’s Chapel during the relief operation, click here:
Geographic. Rev. Harris has also served as chaplain of St. Hilda’s
and St. Hugh’s Episcopal School, as consultant for urban ministries and
re-imagining the city at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, and was one of
the early supporters of the development of a Hip Hop Mass at Trinity Church,
Morissiania, in the South Bronx (www.hiphopemass.org).
Rev.
Harris is able to serve as Vacancy Pastor at St. John’s Church through the
gracious support of Bishop Stephen Bouman, Bishop of the New York Synod of the
Metropolitan Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and Bishop Mark Sisk of the
Episcopal Diocese of New York. This interchangeable relationship between the
Lutheran and Episcopal denominations was made possible by the signing of the
Concordat of Agreement. Since, in its history, St. John’s Church has been
Presbyterian and Episcopalian in addition to being Lutheran, Rev. Harris feels
right at home. In addition to serving at St. John’s, Rev. Harris is the
Executive Director of the Garden of Forgiveness, an interfaith, educational
501(c)3. Based on Rev. Harris’ experiences at Ground Zero, the Garden of
Forgiveness seeks to educate about the power of forgiveness to heal the past and
create the future. For more information on the Garden of Forgiveness, visit
